Sterling Vineyards, one of Napa Valley’s premiere wineries, offers distinct and beautifully crafted wines. The Sterling Vineyards Platinum wines represent the finest varietal expressions crafted with approachability yet age worthiness in mind. The Platinum Merlot shows depth, precision and an intensity that is uniquely Napa Valley.
The Sterling Vineyards Platinum Merlot is a brilliant ruby red color in the glass with black cherry, fresh plum and sweet vanilla spice pronounced on the nose. The expressive aromas lead to a juicy, velvety mouthfeel where the core fruit flavors of wild berries and red fruit are underpinned by silky, milk chocolate notes. The wine is captivating with true varietal character shining through and supported by soft yet present tannins.
The 2015 growing season in the Napa Valley was of outstanding quality marked with ideal weather throughout and no issues from frost, heat spikes or rain. The continuation of California’s drought brought a dry winter followed by a dry and early spring with an early bud break. Weather was warm and consistent throughout late spring and summer which allowed for full development in the grapes. Harvest began in August, and although overall crop loads were low due to continued drought conditions the quality and depth of flavor of the fruit was excellent.
This signature Napa Valley Merlot is of the highest quality, and the region is famous for not only outstanding expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon but also Merlot. Napa Valley offers an ideal combination of topography, geology and climate that enables Merlot fruit to reach optimum ripeness, balance, power and finesse. For the 2015 Platinum Merlot, 100% of the grapes were selected from the Missimer Vineyard located in the heart of the Stags Leap District.
Director of Winemaking Harry Hansen was raised in nearby Sonoma County. “One of my earliest memories of wine was the gallon jug of red wine that we always had at home. I would go with my father to a local winery, maybe in Kenwood or Healdsburg, to refill that jug and chit-chat with the winery proprietors. The aromas of those wines were always something attractive, somehow mysterious, but always memorable.”
Harry joined Sterling Vineyards and relocated to Napa Valley just before the 2011 Harvest. “The opportunity to join such a respected Napa Valley winery is exciting and a fantastic next step in my winemaking career. Sterling Vineyards is making some wonderful wines, and I look forward to taking that next step up in quality and reputation.”
