"The 2015 Chardonnay Durell Vineyard is the most powerful and phenolic of the Chardonnays I tasted from Chateau St. Jean. The apricot, graphite, smoke, orange peel and lemon confit flavors build as this expansive, structured Chardonnay shows off its personality. This is a decidedly big style. Then again, that is Durrell." - Antonio Galloni, July 2018

Wine & Vintage Details

Tasting Note

The Chateau St. Jean Durell Vineyard Chardonnay is a vibrant, generous wine with bright aromas of ripe white pear, toasted brioche, Meyer lemon and creme brule. The nose leads to a rich, round and textured mouthfeel where the fruit flavors are underpinned by toasted hazelnut and sweet vanilla spice notes. The overall elegance of the wine offers a pleasing cool-climate structure, is well-balanced with bright acidity, and has a long, lemon-oil finish.

Vintage

The 2015 growing season was another beautiful vintage with mild temperatures and no weather upsets throughout. The season got off to an early start in the spring and continued through to an early start of harvest with dry and uniform weather. The resulting grapes, although overall yields were slightly down, were of very high quality.

Vineyard & Winemaking Details

Vineyard

The celebrated Durell Vineyard is located in the northwestern corner of Sonoma in Carneros - a cool-climate region noted for its highly acclaimed Chardonnay fruit. The Durell Vineyard receives the cooling breezes and morning fog from the nearby San Pablo Bay and Pacific Ocean and also basks in the plentiful afternoon sunshine.

Winemaking

Classic winemaking techniques of barrel fermentation and sur lie aging are used in crafting this single-vineyard designate Chardonnay. Clonal selection plays an important role in the final blend, with both Clone 5 and Clone 15 being used exclusively. After completing malolactic fermentation, the wine spent 15 months in 100% French oak barrels (45% new).
